E-mail Lists

DO-WIRE is a moderated e-mail announcement list covering the convergence of democracies and the Internet around the world.

FSUmedia Focuses on discussion of the media in the NIS. Postings focus on recent developments related to journalists, journalism training, and the media business.

Green Horizon is a free newsletter designed to help journalists stay ahead of environmental news in Central and Eastern Europe. Twice a month, Green Horizon offers tips on upcoming stories to watch for, as well as information and ideas to help journalists develop in-depth pieces about the region's environment. Green Horizon is produced by the Media Information Service (MIS) of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe.

Institute for War and Peace Reporting offers reports available free to subscribers via e-mail with easy subscribe/unsubscribe access on the website or via an e-mail message. Reports translated into Albanian, Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian, Russian and French.

RJOUR-L A Russian-language electronic mail discussion list that automatically distributes information between journalists and media organizations.

TV Monitor A new, twice-monthly, Russian-language newsletter covering developments in TV broadcasting in the former Soviet Union. Published by Pilugin International Ventures, Inc., TV Monitor contains articles on the latest news and events affecting this industry, as well as information on ratings and other monitoring data.

Web Sites

Directory of Electronic Magazines, Journals and Newsletters NIS related news resources that focus on particular regions (Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Vladivostok) or particular topics (Environment, Law, Economics) which are available electronically--either on the Web, or through e-mail.

GlasNews A quarterly on-line publication on all aspects of communications-- journalism, telecommunications, photography, advertising, etc-- relating to the NIS news media.

Guide of Fellowships for Journalists Fellowship opportunities for foreign journalists to study in the United States, Europe and worldwide.

International Center for Journalists The International Journalists' Network, found on ICFJ's site, is a resource and means of communication for journalists and media assistance professionals, and reports on the state of the media in many different countries.

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) The site has information about IFJ membership, policies, current activities and publications. "Direct Line" and newsletters from Europe and Asia are available, as are press releases, protests, and news about actions over union and professional rights.

Internews Network Kazakhstan A weekly electronic bulletin covering various issues concerning the activity of the electronic mass media in Kazakhstan (radio and television).

Internews Russia Internews helps to develop independent broadcasting institutions in Eastern Europe and the former USSR. The Web site has a wealth of information about the media in the NIS, including profiles of organizations which defend the rights of journalists and freedom of speech, the text of media legislation, and media-related bulletins and newsletters.

The Jamestown Foundation The Foundation produces daily, weekly, and analytical bulletins about events in the former USSR which are distributed to government officials, journalists, the academic community and subscribers. Non-current issues (usually older than a month or two) of some of these publications such as the Monitor, Prism, and Commentary are available for free from the Foundation's Web site.

Kabarnoma covers the growing world of electronic mass media in Uzbekistan. Published by Internews Uzbekistan.

Media Education in Russia was created in February 2000 by Professor Alexander Fedorov. It has both Russian and English language sections and Prof. Fedorov welcomes any comments or feedback about it.

Moscow Media Law and Policy Center The Center's Web site includes the full text of ten books and reports, its monthly Russian-language publication ZiP, which reports on media issues at the federal and regional level, and a selection of media laws.

National Press Institute's Newspaper Crisis Recovery Program - information on the effect of the economic crisis on non-state press in Russia.

ProMedia Ukraine The Web site for an IREX-managed media project in Ukraine, the site has current news from Ukraine and links to Ukrainian newspapers and magazines, and information about media law.

Russian Story Free Russian-language full text search of dozens of up-to-date Russian newspapers. Free previews of articles (Charge for full articles). Good research tool.

Transitions The successor of OMRI's bi-weekly magazine Transition, the new publication is published by the Institute for Journalism in Transition, a non-governmental organization in Prague. Select articles are available online from the current issue and the full text of the magazine is available three months after it appears in print. Be sure to look at the collection of political cartoons.

Voice of Russia Home page with information about the organization and contact information. Also has daily news broadcast in Russian and English that can be heard over the Internet.

Web site for environmental journalists in Eastern Europe sponsored by the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC).

1998 World Press Freedom Review an overview of press freedom violations and major media developments in various countries is now available.
