Russian Script
This page will provide instructions on downloading and installing a
Russian Script. Russian Script is a piece of software which "localizes"
your computer to a particular geographic or linguistic region. I am
assuming that you're running System 7.x.x and higher.
The users of Mac OS 9 can obtain the Cyrillic script from the software included on your System installation CD. You will find a set of complete instructions on Step 1 page.
The scripts listed below are also compatible with System 9 (unless stated otherwise).
If you choose to use Cyrillic software bundled with System 9, skip the remainder of this page and proceed to Step 3.

There are several free choices for obtaining the script:
- cRussify & xRussify Mac
An installer containing such resources as a Russian script, fonts and
keyboard layouts. Separate versions for System 7, System 8 & 9, and Mac OS X (xRussify).
- Ultimate Cyrillic
The documentation is in Russian, but obtaining the script is fairly
straight forward: just run the installer. Large file (1.6 Mb) to download.
Compatible with MacOS 8 and 9.
- from Eudora Cyrillic package
By Andreas Prilop. Smaller file. Reportedly works fine with MacOS 8.
- from Apple's System 7
Note! This script doesn't work with MacOS 8 and above. Large (1.4
Mb) file.
Download Ultimate Cyrillic
Script package (1.6 MB) from Macintosh Club of St.
Petersburg web site - a freeware product which adds necessary language
resource s including a Russian script. There is an installer in the
package that will place all the resources into the appropriate places in
your System folder. The documentation is in Russian.
See There's a manual (pdf) for more information.
From folks at Macintosh in Russia
comes another freeware Russificator - a collection of resources including
fonts and keyboard layouts. There are even layouts with the CapsLock
trick!
Go to the
download page, fill out a registration form (cRussify & xRussify Mac is freeware)
and pick the correct version - 1.x.x is for System 7.5 and up, 2.x.x is
for System 8 & 9, and xRussify for Mac OS X.
Thanks to Kenneth W. Kemp for reminding me about this product. 8/28/98
Andreas Prilop's Eudora
Cyrillic package (128 KB) available at Info-Mac archives contains a
Russian script. Reportedly compatible with MacOS 8.
- Make sure you followed Step 1 and downloaded and installed Apple Standard Cyrillic fonts.
- You will find the script inside the "Fonts & Keyboards" folder, see illustration below.

- Take the outlined icon, drag and drop it on top of a CLOSED System folder, then confirm that you are installing a script file.
- Restart your Mac.

Apple Software Updates server if you're using System 7-derived resources and have subsequently upgraded to System 8. 8/28/98
Russian Script is a piece of software from Apple (a part of Russian System
7) which "localizes" your computer to a particular geographic or
linguistic region. I recommend using the script for your needs and
not the whole Russian System (see below) since you'll be
much less likely to run into weird software incompatibilities.
- Make sure you followed Step 1 and downloaded and installed Apple Standard Cyrillic fonts, without them Russian
Script will not function properly.
- Download an image of Install
1. If you're having difficulties with this link, go to the mirrors page which contains an exhaustive listing
of FTP servers in the USA and abroad.
- Use StuffIt Expander to
decompress the resulting image file.
- This
step is important, don't bypass it,
or you will not be
able to get the Script file! Restart your computer holding down
Shift key to disable the Extensions.
- Use Disk
Copy software from Apple to mount the disk image on your desktop
by dragging Install 1.image file onto Disk Copy icon.
- Double-click on the floppy to open it and look for System file.

- Double-click on the System file to open it. Note: Do not try
to run any programs from this disk nor try dragging anything into the
System folder on your computer unless my instructions specifically call
for it!
- Find a file of a kind "script" and a name that looks like a letter e
with a hat followed by six squares - this is the Russian Script (see
illustration below). Copy it to your hard disk.

- At this point we are about to modify your System software. Whenever
that is about to happen, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup
copy of your System and keep the original in a safe place so that you can
restore it if necessary.
Drag the Russian Script on top of your
closed System folder until it becomes highlighted, and release the mouse
button. - Confirm that you would indeed like to install a script system
into your System file.
- Restart your Macintosh.
- If everything worked as it was supposed to, you should see a new menu
on the top right corner of you screen between an application menu and a
help menu. It is called a Keyboard menu, and it has an icon of a
US flag. You can select About Keyboard menu... under this menu to
learn more about its function.
