Excellent Web site! Much valuable information on former socialist countries particularly Internet related. My firm VideoBridge International is also plowing the information highway fields. We offer a dedicated videoconferencing connection into Moscow. This Fall we expect to offer St. Petersburg, Prague, Budapest and Bratislava. By late winter we expect to be operating in the three Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Odessa and Lvov. We have anumber of educational and humanitarian clients as users and expect to increase communications both to and from the region using the latest in satellite based videoconferencing. Look forward to hearing fromall interested organizations.

I find this to be an excellent resource for those (such as myself) who are interested in the dynamic shifts taking place in the former Soviet Union. Specifically, I am interested in sustainable urban development which depends upon the integration of "communities"--so important when building a pluralistic society. Incidentally, I am currently a student who plans to get involved with CCSI here in Seattle. Da zaftra!

This is my first time on the site and I was very happy to know you all are out there. I lived and worked in Moscow as an attorney and manager from December 1991 until March 1995. I am currently looking for interesting opportunities to work in the former Soviet Union in the area of international environmental issues and sustainable development. Good luck to everyone and contact me if you know of persons involved with the environment in the FSU.

CCSI responds:
As always, we suggest that you keep your eye on our announcements page for job opportunities that we come across and post to our CivilSoc listserv. But, we also strongly recommend that you sign up for the EnvCEE-L listserv if you haven't already. It does includes occassional job offers, but it is also an excellent resource for announcements and news related to the environment in the FSU and Eastern Europe.

A list of a number of listservs on various topics affecting the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are available on this site under the "Resources and Research" section under "Electronic Resources" The Ee-jobs list should be of particular interest to anyone who is looking for a job in, or relating to the former Soviet Union or Eastern Europe.

Looks interesting.

Hello! A lot of interresting things going on evidently. I think information of this kind is necessary to balance the ordinary news reports, focusing on all evil there is in the world!

Dominating in your News-letter and on the Web-site are news about US-Russian projects. Personaly I'm engaged in a number of projects between Sweden and the three Baltic states. To promote contacts between those peoples on each side of the Baltic sea I've written (in Swedish language) history books and travel-guides to Estonia and Latvia. I'm presently working with a book on Lithuania.

CCSI responds:
While our website does presently have a focus on the US, we do wish the site to have a more global focus. We welcome any contributions, whether information about organizations or summaries of projects, that anyone wishes to submit. Information should be sent to CCSI in English with contact information for you or your organization.

I write on the emergence of civil society in the Americas in the context of neoliberalism. However, I am most interested in a comparative perspective, particularly with the Eastern European nations and the nations of the former Soviet Union.

Projects like this and (or better especially, in our case) Ron Pope's Serendipity Project do link people together in many ways: it enabled this lovely Russian lady that is now my now wife to learn English, which is actually used as our family language, unless either my Russian improves in a way compatible with her already good German. Being on travel in Turkey, we found each others by a classic case of serendipity. A long story, too long to go in details here. We have just come back from two wonderful weeks in Vladimir, a town of the ancient 'Golden Ring', where also a 'German Home' finally has been installed. I would like to encourage everybody to find a way into Russia and take part of their undiluted way of life. It's worth it. If you would like to see us, visit our homepage at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gerhard_heckmann/ We're glad to hear from you!

Great resource for civics/community development. My organization, ECHO, has for 5 years conducted a pro-active civic education program in Siberia. I would like to encourage anyone interested in civics/community development in Siberia to drop me a line.

CCSI responds:
ECHO, Inc. (Educated Choices Heighten Opportunities) is an organization based in Maine, which works closely with its offices in Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk to promote democracy, support family planning, promote education in schools, provide internet access, and various other projects.

Indeed, this is a very unique web site. I enjoy learning more about Belarus, Russia, and all of Eastern Europe. I hope that the providers continue to update the site and keep up the goal of providing information to all of us outside the Eastern European area with adequate information.
