ENVCEE-L is a new Listserv sponsored by The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC), a non-profit foundation based in Budapest, Hungary. ENVCEE-L is distinguished by the quality and interest of its information and the significant participation by groups in the region. ENVCEE-L includes information about the Baltic countries, Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia.

The REC was established in 1990 by Hungary, the U.S., and the European Community to promote cooperation among environmental groups and to promote the development of a civil society. Besides its headquarters in Budapest, it also has offices in Warsaw, Bratislava, Bucharest, and Sofia.

ENVCEE-L is only a month old, so it is still adapting to the responses of its subscribers, but its first few weeks have been very promising. In the last couple of weeks it has included:

One the most interesting aspects of ENVCEE-L is that list moderator, Rossen Roussev, regularly posts to the list a variety of information bulletins, including:

EcoDefense
Baltic Sea Region Environmental News Bulletin which is published by an environmental organization of the same name in Kaliningrad. EcoDefense includes: news about environmental organizations in Scandinavia, the Baltics States, Poland and Germany; reports on environmental projects undertaken by governments in the region; opinion pieces and even book reviews--two American Peace Corps volunteers have written a guide book to the Bieszczady mountains in south-east Poland.
Fax-Postup
a weekly summary of news from Ukraine, which is published by Post-Postup in Lviv. A recent issue of Fax-Postup included news about: the Crimean parliament, the national budget, a real-estate auction in Kharkiv, privatization efforts in Luhansk, and a threatened rail strike in the Donetsk region.
The Environmental Cooperation Bulletin produced by Kompass Resources International.

In the last couple of weeks ENVCEE-L has averaged 2-3 messages a day, which total around 40-50,000 bytes a week.
