| Our group of
travelers poses for a photo in front of the Novgorod Kremlin orientation map.
The Kremlin was built as a fort to protect the local people from raids or war
and has stood majestically for over 500 years. As we moved inside the Kremlin,
we saw the eternal flame for the unknown soldier, the museum, the monument built
in 1862 to commemorate the millennium of Russia, and a the beautiful Cathedral
of St. Sofia, operational today as it was in the 11th century. |
 |
| The Kremlin
walls were beautiful and also practical for protecting the townspeople. Most
cities in Russia had a kremlin or fort. The Kremlin in Moscow is the
most famous and is often thought to be the kremlin
by foreigners. |

This is the
Intourist Hotel, where we stayed, in Novgorod. It's typical of Russian hotels
with clean rooms and 50's style furniture. The beds are all twin, and are made
up with dense, soft wool blankets that are in a sheet envelope. The hotel is
safe and comfortable, and is within walking distance of the Kremlin, the
Novgorod department store, and several old stone churches. We eat meals in the
hotel and local restaurants - and enjoy some excellent meals including fish stew
and blinis. |
