    With a variety of programs, this international, nongovernmental, nonprofit organization provides opportunities to help those of all ages gain the knowledge, skills, and, most importantly, the understanding of those of other cultures.   • Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) *

    This is a consortium of institutions of higher learning formed to enhance the role of education in promoting democratic institutions, economic development including technology transfer, decentralized decision making, human health, sustainable habitation of the earth, and common moral and social values.

  • Andrei Sakharov Center *

    This nonprofit organization was developed to honor the Nobel's Peace Prize winner's goals to maintain peace and the defense of the rights among all mankind. This organization works to support the Public Commission for the Preservation of the Legacy of Academician A.D.Sakharov in Russia. Chaired by his widow, Elena Bonner, the goals are achieved through a variety of programs to educate, train and research democracy, the rights of all people and the Soviet Union's history.

  • AutoRoads Users Guild *

    The AutoRoads Users Guild site presents several resources pertaining to automobile ownership, maintenance, and traffic concerns in Russia.

  • Building Technology Information Center *

    This nonprofit foundation was founded under a cooperative agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) - Research Center. Their purpose is the support the development of the construction of private sector homes and the building materials manufacturers in Russia that uses the most appropriate technology from both the US and Russia to meet housing needs in Russia. This site provides an large amount of information on their activities, support, technical information and the promotion of investment opportunities for US companies in Russia.

  • CECHE - The Center for Communications, Health and the Environment *

    CECHE, a nonprofit organization created in 1990, addresses the environmental and health challenges of developing nations in Central Europe, the fSU and elsewhere. Their mission is to assist these countries to overcome these obstacles with a variety of programs to improve health and relieve the adverse health effects caused by environmental pollution. They also produce an electronic newsletter, "The Global Health and Environmental Bulletin".

  • Center for Citizens Initiatives *

    This non-profit organization based in San Francisco is "dedicated to empowering Russian citizens to take responsibility for their personal futures and assisting Russia in its transition to a market-based economy and a civil society".

  • Center for Civil Society International *

    This nonprofit organization fosters the development of civil society by encouraging relationships between nonprofits in the West and nonprofit/grassroots organizations in the emerging societies of the countries of the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe.

  • Center for International Private Enterprise *

    An affiliate of the US Chamber of Commerce and supported by the National Endowment for Democracy, the US Agency for International Development, and private sources, this organization's goal is to serve and a source of information about ongoing efforts of economic reform, establishment of private enterprise and the consolidation of democracy worldwide. As a benefit, all issues of CIPE's magazine "Economic Reform Today" plus other publications are available online.

  • EnviroLink *

    EnviroLink is a valuable, non-profit, grassroots online community that unites organizations and volunteers around the world and provides them with an online presence and resource. With the dissemination of information, a variety of products projects and environmental resources they prove their commitment to promoting a sustainable society.

  • Global Fund for Women *

    Established in 1987, this international grantmaking organization focuses on rights for women and provide funds for groups that are committed to women's well-being and full participation in society, encourage increased support worldwide for women's programs, provide leadership in promoting the importance of women's participation internationally and, give support to women's groups working on issues that are considered, emerging, controversial, or difficult. As is the only US-based organization that exclusively supports international women's rights, issues supported include literacy, domestic violence, economic autonomy, telecommunications and media, the international trafficking of women, all the while heightening awareness of their needs and strengths.

  • Human Rights Online *

    This large collection of information resources in the field of human rights globally includes international and national documents, publications, information about human rights non-governmental organizations, public actions and other materials. (In Russian only)

  • International Exchange Council (IEC) *

    Founded in 1993, IEC provides opportunities for business, academic and cultural exchange between individuals representing these spheres in the US and Russia.  The IEC Mission is: Initiating and encouraging educational, economic and cultural exchanges for improved understanding between the peoples of Michigan - the US and Russia.  The IEC has facilitated business training programs in banking and in manufacturing through the cooperation of West Michigan corporations and has cooperated with the Center for Citizen Initiatives to coordinate its Productivity Enhancement Program in Michigan. IEC is interested in cooperating with other NGO's, and are willing list US - Russia related events on its Web Site Events Calendar when appropriate.

  • Jamestown Foundation *

    One of the activities of this non-profit, nonpartisan organization is to publish several periodicals for their subscribers (archives are available online). The foundation and these periodicals monitor the progress of reform in the former Soviet Union and and assist independent fSU in the promotion of democracy and free enterprise organizations

  • Project For A Perfect World *

    This organization helps to raise funds for an art center for Russian Orphans. They also organize the "In Your Face Diplomats" tour, which is an opportunity for people to travel to Russia, visit orphanages in Russia and Bosnia, and dress up as clowns to entertain the children.

  • Russia and West Virginia Foundation *

    A non-profit volunteer organization formed to promote business, education and cultural exchanges between Russia and the United States.

  • Russian American Cultural Center at Russia Wharf, Inc. *

    This nonprofit cultural center, located in Boston, Massachussetts, brings the sometimes forgotten, historical and cultural ties U.S. and Russia had once shared through a variety of activites such as dance, music and more.

  • The Carter Center *

    Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, this nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute is "dedicated to fighting disease, hunger, poverty, conflict, and oppression through collaborative initiatives in the areas of democratization and development, global health, and urban revitalization.

    In the area of democratization is the Commission on Radio and Television Policy which is co-chaired by Jimmy Carter and Eduard Sagalaev, president of Russia's first independent television station. The aim is to identify "policies to support the worldwide development of broadcast media free from undue political and economic constraints. Such freedom of the press helps sustain the basic principles of fairness and responsibility on which democracies are based."

  • The Sabre Foundation, Inc. *

    This non-profit charitable organization is active in educational support to countries in the former Communist bloc. They are involved in a number of areas including the donation of learning materials since 1986. This ongoing activity has provided almost 3 million books, journals, videos and CD-ROMs to thousands of institutions and countless students, scientists, scholars, researchers, medical professionals, lawmakers etc. in the 16 countries it serves in Eastern Europe , the fSU and other transitional nations.

    The Library and Information Technology Services project (formerly TAP) provides electronic information tools and skills for their overseas constitutents. Initiatives involve different forms of Internet training, on-going referencing, information technology in library development in addition to telecommunications/Internt related equipment and books for selected institutions.

  • The Sacred Earth Network *

    This site really addresses two things - the development of communications and networking possibilities for fSU environmental NGO's and also, deep ecology and the spiritual aspect of the environmental movement. Programs and projects include the Environmental Telecommunications Project, Eurasian Snow Leopard Project (ESLP), the Eurasian Environmental E-mail Directory and newsletters.

  • UNICEF: Voices of Youth *

    The United Nations Children's Fund was founded in 1946 and is the only organization of the United Nations that is dedicated solely to the advocation of the rights and welfare of children through a variety of programs and research activities in more than 140 countries. They maintain more than 200 field offices including those in Armenia , Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia , Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan , Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Their information statement is also available in Russian.

  • United Nation's ReliefWeb *

    As a project of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the purpose of this effort is "to strengthen the response capacity of the humanitarian relief community through the timely dissemination of reliable information on disaster response, preparedness, and prevention".
