The highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognize that we ought to control our thoughts. - Charles Darwin
Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Region
This region in northwestern Russia of 85,900 square kilometers (53,258
square miles) not only contains the famous city of St. Petersburg but also
many other smaller cities and towns that are worth exploring. Although the
region was formed in 1927, the modern boundaries were defined in 1944. In
addition to the more than 1800 small lakes in the region, it contains the
Ladoga and Onega lakes which are the largest European fresh water
reservoirs. (The largest fresh water lake in the world, Baikal, is in the Asian
part of Russia.)
The following is a list of sites describing the Leningrad region in general
and the smaller cities and towns that surround St.
Petersburg. Even though the capital of the region, Leningrad, was
renamed to St. Petersburg in 1991, the region itself is still called
Leningrad Oblast.
We hope this list will continue to grow as more communities become
represented on the World Wide Web so please be sure to let us know if you
are aware of any other sites.
