Voronezh Civic Networking

Useful meetings and contacts

  • In order to strengthen the project's advertising campaign, the project officers carried out briefings for the TV and Radio representatives aimed to attract attention of individuals and public institutions which may be interested in joining civil network activities. Thus, we reached an agreement to make a series of radio programs communicating the project "Voronezh Civic Network" activities to the public. Radio programs will help establish and facilitate the dialogue between local public officials, public institutions and individuals. The radio programs will cover politics and legislature, environment and travels, work and housekeeping, news of business and cultural life.

  • On the 21st of May, the first program of the series went on the air. This radio program was meant to cover the concept of a global networking, network terminology, and also the goals of "Voronezh Civic Network " project. Program listeners got acquainted with the main tasks of the project and the new possibilities that are offered to the community by the project.
The following specialists took part in the program and helped cover various aspects of the radio presentation: Lubov Grigorieva, the project coordinator, Galina Koltsova, Tatiana Zhukova, Yelena Molocheva, and Olga Kruchkova, the project officers and specialists of the Regional Center of New Information Technologies. Sergey Synorov, the reporter from Voronezh State Television/ Radio Company and one of the members of the Voronezh Civic Network, anchored the program.
After the program, we received a large feedback, despite the fact that the program was broadcast on Sunday morning, when majority of the town's people went out of town to spend the week-end in the countryside. The project officers at the Central Public Access Point facility received a number of calls from public institutions and individuals of various ages which expressed willingness to attend training sessions and take advantage of new services that became available due to the project. This first radio program came out to be a very effective promotional activity that helped to form the groups of persons willing to attend training sessions and visit the Central Public Access Point facility for five months forward. We hope, that the dialogue with the radio listeners will contribute new ideas to the project and help reveal new trends in project's development.
  • Lubov Grigorieva and Vladimir Smirnov, the project officers, carried out a number of meetings with representatives of public institutions in order to strengthen the networking community and promote unrestricted discussion of the city's most urgent and important problems. The following public institutions have agreed to support the information exchange:
    • Russian United Methodist Church,
    • Foreign Orthodox Church,
    • Azerbaijan Cultural Community,
    • Germenevtical Club of Voronezh State University (Department of Systematic Philosophy),
    • Bard Song Club "Parus Nadezdy",
    • Humanitarian Center "Grace".
Besides, the project's staff conducted a number of meetings with some of the foreign visitors of the city, interested in further development of links with public institutions in Voronezh. Among them were: Dr. Strong, professor of Jon's Yesli Washington Seminary, and 12 seminarists, the officer of the USA Library of Congress, students from Costa Rica, Peru and Spain, studying in Voronezh university and colleges.
  • On the 26th of May, Lubov Grigorieva and Tatiana Zhukova, the officers of the project, carried out Án "Open lesson " at public access point Internet class in Regional Juvenile Library to train the civic networkers to use the web as means of dialog and not only as storage and source of information.
  • In order to promote the project activities, on the 24th of May Tatiana Zhukova, the officer of the project, prepared the report for the Scientific - Practical Conference "State-operated Regional Libraries: Traditions and Prospects", which took place at the Regional Library named after Nikitin.

Central Public Access Center activities

  • As a result of work carried out by technical assistants of the Central Public Access Point facility, the connection of the Civic Network to main digital channel was completed. Two physical lines were installed for this purpose on the segment, connecting Voronezh Intertown Telephone/Telegraph Station and the Territorial Unit of System Channels "Rosstelecom". Besides connecting, additional software for work in digital channel was installed and customized. The preparatory technical work for inserting of a digital flow to the multiplexer "Rosstelecom" in Voronezh and Moscow was fulfilled. As a result, the data transfer rate of the main channel Voronezh-Moscow of the Voronezh Civic Network segment improved approximately 4 times.
  • The following users were connected to the Central Public Access Point by allocated channels of communication:
    • Voronezh Regional Clinical Treatment-Diagnostic Center;
    • Voronezh Institute of New Information Technologies.
  • The Central Public Access Point provided the following services to civic network users: an access to Internet, operation of personal mail boxes. Also, CPAP provides consultations on web navigation in order to search for a particular source of information.
  • During this month, the sub-project "Web-workshop" continued to operate at the Central Public Access Point facility, where civic network users received consultations on design, publication and update of their materials on the server. All services of "Web-workshop" are provided free-of-charge for the civic networkers.
