Monthly Reports

Chelyabinsk Civic Networking
July, 2000

July was a month of vacations for most of the project participants. Nevertheless we could do two things that were planned from the beginning of work on CCN project:

1. Bulletin board (forum) has been opened on CCN web site which is working in testing mode. Within the next few weeks some topic headings (sections) will be created for "normal" discussions after gathering the opinions of CCN members.

The base was Discus system that was adapted for Cyrillic support, sending email messages, etc.

2. During the work on the project, in 1998 we developed MailGate program allowing to receive HTML documents and files from FTP sites through email (see http://mailgate.urc.ac.ru/). We always paid serious attention to this point because not all of our users have on-line access to Internet. Besides constantly there is a treat of bringing the payment for time of phone connections by Ministry of communications of Russian Federation.

The MailGate module to Usenet server was written in July. Some functions were realized in the module: for providing access to news groups, sending lists of groups and articles and sending the articles. Our programmers took into account possible errors in user requests which were located in situation worker of MailGate.

All modules (HTTP, FTP, and NNTP) deal with the same set of commands in messages of users. Their description is in help file that might be received if you send command "help' as a line of the message to address '[email protected]u'.

As I can judge MailGate is the best program in this filed at present. It is freeware and can be downloaded from anonymous FTP site of the networking center:
