Innokenty Fedorovich Annensky (1856-1909)

Innokenty Fedorovich Annensky's literary legacy is not expansive, but diverse. He was a poet, a classical philologist, a dramatic author, a critic, and a poet. Many of his dramatic works were loosely based on ancient myths.

Annensky was born into the family of a public official in Omsk. While still a child, he was taken to St. Petersburg. Innokentii lost his parents early on, and was raised in the family of his older brother, N.F. Annensky. His brother was a "Narodnik" and a political activist. Innokentii himself became a teacher, and taught classical languages and ancient literature studies in a classical school in Tsarkoe Selo. He served as the Director of this school from 1886 until his death in 1909.

In literary history, Annensky Is remembered primarily as a poet. He started writing in the 1880's. His first collection of poems was published in 1904 in a book entitled "Quiet Songs," under the psuedonym "Nik. T.-o" The second and last of his books was published posthumously. It was entitled "Cypress Casket".
