Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) canceled an excise tax on fuel, carpets, sugar, and furniture.
Prime Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan will meet third decade of January and discuss questions of economic cooperation in 1996.
The presidents of the CIS countries will meet in Moscow January 19th to discuss the Customs Union, peacemaking forces in Tajikistan and creation of a CIS Defense Ministers Council.
On December 30, the day of inauguration of reelected President Akaev somebody called the police and informed about to assassinate him. The State Committee on National Security (ex-KGB) said on January 11, that this information was false, though it made many officers miss their New Year parties. The caller was twenty two year old Pavel Skarlygin who wanted to play a prank by representing himself as a former Alfa officer, and now a professional killer. Currently he is under arrest.
Frontier forces of the Russian Federation on the borders of Kyrgyzstan confiscated 263.2 kg of narcotics, 6.3 kg of precious metals, 117 tons of rare metals, and about 60 rare hunting birds.
One hundred eleven thousand seven hundred children were born last year in Kyrgyzstan, that's 7 thousand registered births more than in 1994. Death count was 2 thousand less than in 1994 with 35000.
Thirty thousand seven hundred fewer citizens than in 1994 left Kyrgyzstan.
Total population increased by 63000 or 1.4%, and on January 1, 1996 was 4.547.000 people.
In 1996 exports will go up to 411 million dollars, an increase of 10.4%.
Exports in 1995 were 380-385 million dollars.
On January 3rd 1996, President Akaev ordered a referendum to be held February 10 about amendments to the Constitution giving more power to the presidential branch, and defining the power of each house of Parliament.
Kyrgyz independence has been recognized by 128 countries, Kyrgyzstan has diplomatic relations with 89 and in 16 of them it's own diplomatic epresentatives.
Fourteen international organizations, such as UNDP, World Bank and UNICEF are active in the Kyrgyz Republic.
Roza Otunbaeva, the foreign minister said that 1995 was "the year of Asia" for Kyrgyzstan. 1996 is to become a year of economic diplomacy, stated Mrs. Otunbaeva.
On January 12th, Presidents of Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan met in the Kazak town of Kokchetau. This little informal summit was organized to congratulate Akaev on his reelection as president of Kyrgyzstan. Also they discussed the upcoming summit in Moscow, and checked each country's positions.
Prime minister Apas Djumagulov during his working visit to Moscow, held talks concerning the expected entry of Kyrgyzstan into the customs union joining Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus. This important step would lower current prices on imported goods from these countries, including coal and gas. Kazakhstan's industrial production increased by about 20% after they joined this union, which originally included Belarus and Russia.
Late in the evening on January 11th, police arrested a man with 6 grams enriched uranium. He was getting ready to sell it for $500.000.
