Small businesses' share of national production doubled in 1995. It
was up to 14% with a value of 94 mil. soms. Small businesses are all
enterprises with fewer than 50 employees.

Santa-Fe in Kyrgyzstan
On February 8 the President of the state concern "Kyrgyzaltyn",
Dastan Sarygulov, and the first vice president of the American Santa-Fe
corporation in the presence of the American Ambassador Eileen Malloy, singed
an agreement about opening a joint venture named "Solton Sary". The joint
venture was given a lisence to goldmine in Naryn Oblast.

Nuclear test is expected at Lob Nor
<p>
All the dosimetric equipment and branches of the Agency on
hydrometeorology and environment control are highest alert to
record all changes after the nuclear test at the Chinese Lob Nor range. The
data collected by the agency will be used to confirm or refute statements by
different organizations in an ongoing discussion of whether the underground
tests influence the ecological situation of the republic.

$39.5, in Kazakstan $97.9.

Expenditures on medical care for 1996 will go up to 4.8% of GNP from 3% last
year, education will receive about 9%, up from 6.3%. As Daniil Kyshtobayev,
assistant editor of Slovo Kyrgyzstana, said "such change in the government
policy towards social welfare is logical and natural. The first stage of the
economic reform's main goal was macroeconomic stabilization has been
successfully completed. This stage was accompanied by an unavoidable rise
in unemployment and the destitution of a whole level of society. The special
indicator of differentiation within a society may be calculated as a
correlation of the income of the top ten percent with the income of the
poorest ten percent of the population. In order to preserve social stability,
this indicator should not exceed 7. In Kyrgyzstan this indicator is said to
have reached 10.5. This is still not too bad if we compare it with Russian
Federation's 15 and 30-40 of some other CIS states.

C U R I O U S F A C T S

Many foreign companies and international organizations are expected to move
their Central Asian offices based in Almaty to Bishkek. New Kazak capital
Akmola is too far from other Central Asian capitals.

The highest rates of electors' participation in the Referendum were reached
in Talas and Naryn oblasts. They were 99% and 99.95% accordingly.

The Government sent out a letter to ministries, and to state and public
organizations with suggestion to work out a set of legislative acts about
creation and regulation of "houses of prostitution".

The party of spiritual rebirth "Manas El" is going to build the Temple of
Four Gates in Kyrgyzstan.
According to the leaders of the party, there isn't a similar project
in the modern history of humankind. The temple will be situated a
suburban
area of Bishkek near the Boz Boltok mountain. The temple will look like
a pyramid, the size of the Temple also will mount to that of the one of
Kheop's. The Four Gates will symbolize a unity of four major world religions
and will be open to a follower of any religion or confession. A hundred and
eighty eight stone blocks oat the base of the pyramid will symbolize the
member states of the United Nations. Already, according to the newspaper,
contributions are being sent from different corners of the world. The other
day, the party reported, the Ataman of the Don kazaks of Moscow, Eugene
Bogorodskiy came to Bishkek to donate money to the project.
This summer, Chingiz Aitmatov will convene the Second Issyk Kul forum
to mark the decade jubilee of the first, which in 1986 gathered
intellectuals, writers, politicians from all over the world to speak about
human issues at the end of the millenium. This time the Forum will discuss
the development of a world concept and the development of humankind in XXI
century. The participants in the Forum will lay a foundation of the Temple
of the Four Gates.
