Population: the Novosibirsk region has total population of 2.8 million, 1.6 million of which live in its capital city and its suburbs (1993). 92% of inhabitants are ethnic Russians, 75% are urban population. Size: the region is considerably greater (68,726 square miles) than New England. It is located in the geographic center of Russia (from East to West), and spans one time zone. Farm land makes up to 48% of the territory; more than 5% of the land is occupied by lakes; the Ob Sea, a reservoir created in the 1950s, spans the region for a distance of 145 miles.

The region is divided into four zones: the Suburban Zone, the Eastern one, the Baraba and the Kulunda Zone. The city of Novosibirsk is divided into ten districts. Weather: average daylight temperature in July is +77 F, and in January it is -4F.
