CALL FOR PAPERS

6th ESCAS Conference, Venice, Oct. 1998

The 6th European Society for Central Asian Studies (ESCAS) conference is scheduled to be held at "Universita Ca Foscari di Venezia" in Venice, Italy. The conference, whose general theme is "Central Asia: A Decade of Reforms, Centuries of Memories," will be organized in three panels:

• Space and Time in Central Asian History: Constructing the new national identities, reinterpretations and reevaluations of Central Asian History.
  
• Redrawing the Lines of Identity: Views and analyses in the fields of language, literature, religion, social anthropology, art, architecture and archaeology.
  
• Reforms and Representations of Legitimacy: Studying the contemporary issues, such as economic reforms, regional cooperation, local and regional conflicts, Central Asia in an international context as well as economic, social, political and environmental topics.
  

The conference will take place October 8-10, 1998. If you are interested in participating in the conference, please send your abstract to the secretary address by March 15. We will send out the final program and registration information by April 1. Note that funding cannot be provided to participants for travel and accommodation.

Dr. Giampiero Bellingeri of Universita Ca Foscari di Venezia has generously assumed responsibility for hosting the 6th ESCAS Conference.
