Other Designations: Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite. Class: Technology. Type: Communications. Nation: Korea, United States. Agency: KARI (Korea). Manufacturer: TRW.

KOMPSAT is the first joint spacecraft development project for the South Korean aerospace agency KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). Its payload will contain several scientific instruments as well as a Ka-band communications device. TRW and Korean engineers will work together to develop the spacecraft. Spacecraft: KOMPSAT is based on TRW's Eagle class of light weight, modular spacecraft. It will have 3-axis stabilisation with dual solar arrays. Payload: The KOMPSAT payload includes a 10 m resolution CCD imaging system which will be supplied by Litton Itek Optical Systems. TRW is supplying a low resolution camera for ocean and Earth resources monitoring. Other scientific instruments will include a device to measure Earth's ionospheric and magnetic fields and a high-energy particle detector.
Financial/Operational:
TRW contract September 19 1994 for $ 32 million.

KOMPSAT Chronology

19 September 1994 Kompsat contract

TRW and Korean engineers would work together to develop the spacecraft. KOMPSAT was based on TRW's Eagle class of light weight, modular spacecraft.

21 December 1999 KOMPSAT Launch Site: Vandenberg . Launch Vehicle: Taurus. Perigee: 690 km. Apogee: 722 km. Inclination: 98.3 deg.

Korean Multipurpose Satellite; carried an ocean color sensor developed by TRW and particle detectors. KOMPSAT was built by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) based on a test model built by TRW; it used the TRW STEP Lightsat bus and had a mass of around 500 kg, with 73 kg of hydrazine fuel.
