PERSONAL DATA:

Born May 2, 1957, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Married to Wendy Lu Williams of Midland, Texas. They have two children. He enjoys skiing, hiking, bicycling, golf and family activities. His mother, Shirley Pudwill, resides in Casselberry, Florida. His adoptive father, William Gorie, resides in Palm City, Florida. His father, Paul Pudwill, is deceased. Her mother, Laura Williams, resides in Midland, Texas. Her father, Deen Williams, is deceased.

EDUCATION:

Graduated from Miami Palmetto High School, Miami, Florida, in 1975. Bachelor of Science degree in ocean engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1979. Master of science degree in aviation systems from the University of Tennessee in 1990.

SPECIAL HONORS:

Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat "V", Joint Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "V" (2), Navy Achievement Medal, 1985 Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic Pilot-of-the-Year.

EXPERIENCE:

Designated a Naval Aviator in 1981. Flew the A-7E Corsair with Attack Squadron 46 aboard the USS America from 1981 to 1983. Transitioned to Strike Fighter Squadron 132 in 1983, flying the F/A-18 Hornet aboard the USS Coral Sea until 1986. Attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in 1987 and served as a Test Pilot at the Naval Air Test Center from 1988 to 1990. Then was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 87 flying the F/A-18 aboard the USS Roosevelt until 1992. Participated in Operation Desert Storm, flying 38 combat missions. In 1992 received orders to U.S. Space Command in Colorado Springs for two years before reporting to Strike Fighter Squadron 106 for F/A-18 refresher training. Was enroute to his command tour of Strike Fighter Squadron 37 when selected as an Astronaut Candidate.

Gorie has accumulated over 3300 hours in more than 30 aircraft and has over 600 carrier landings.

NASA EXPERIENCE:

Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in December 1994, Gorie reported to the Johnson Space Center in March 1995. He has completed a year of training and evaluation and is currently qualified for assignment as a shuttle pilot. He was initially assigned to work safety issues for the Astronaut Office. Gorie presently serves as a spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) in Mission Control for Space Shuttle flights, while awaiting his first flight assignment.

STS-91 - - 1998 Jun 2 - Assignment: Prime Crew. Flight Time: 9.83 days. Flight details: STS-91.
The final shuttle-Mir mission, STS-91 recovered NASA astronaut Andy Thomas from the Mir station and took Russian space chief and ex-cosmonaut Valeri Ryumin to Mir for an inspection tour of the ageing station. This was the first test of the super lightweight Aluminium-Lithium alloy external tank, designed to increase shuttle payload to the Mir / International Space Station orbit by 4,000 kg. At 22:15 GMT Discovery entered an initial 74 x 324 km x 51.6 deg orbit, with the OMS-2 burn three quarters of an hour later circulising the chase orbit. Discovery docked with the SO module on Mir at 17:00 GMT on June 4. NASA equipment was retrieved from the station, and Discovery undocked at 16:01 GMT on June 8, and landed on Runway 15 at Kennedy Space Center at 18:00 GMT on June 12.
STS-99 - - 2000 Feb 11 - Assignment: Prime Crew. Flight Time: 11.23 days. Flight details: STS-99.
On an extremely successful mission the space shuttle Endeavour deployed the 61 metre long STRM mast. This was a side-looking radar that digitally mapped with unprecedented accuracy the entire land surface of the Earth between latitudes 60 deg N and 54 deg S. Sponsors of the flight included the US National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), NASA, and the German and Italian space agencies. Some of the NIMA data would remain classified for exclusive use by the US Department of Defense.
