Profile: Ilya V. Nikiforov

Currently I work as an adjunct professor at the School Of  Law of  St.Petersburg State University (Russia).  I am affiliated with the Department of Civil Law and specialize in civil (private) law, particularly in .information technology law, international business transactions and international private law.   I am doing a Ph.D. dissertation in Law.  My first degree was in computers, so the topic of my thesis relates to intellectual property and other legal aspects of information technology.

A title of an advocate (member of St.Petersburg Bar Association) authorises me to practice law in the Russian Federation.  I am associated with St.Petersburg law office of Egorov, Puginsky, Afanasiev & Partners, a Russian firm which often serves as a local Russian counsel to major western law firms and represents Russian clients internationally.

I am particularly interested in international arbitration and transnational litigation.  I have participated in several international arbitration proceedings, including a series of proceedings under ICC Rules of Arbitration.  Then I gained knowledge of international construction contracts (FIDIC) and practice of international arbitration.  On several occasions I delivered expert opinions on Russian law which were used in proceedings before US, German, Dutch and French courts on various issues of Russian law.

I  am a graduate (Magna Cum Laude) of this School Of  Law of  St.Petersburg State University and also have a degree in computer engineering.  I also studied common law and international law at the School of Law of Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, USA).  After graduation I have started as an associate at St.Petersburg office of Gide Loyrette Nouel.  Then was working with the Legal Department of the International Monetary Fund and served as a foreign legal counsel at Fulbright & Jaworski in Washington, D.C. (USA) before returning to St.Petersburg, Russia.  .  I liked Washington a lot - perhaps for the reason that downtown here (unlike in other American cities) has the same flavor as my home city.
