The Adopt a Hospital Program, established in 1993 by the New Jersey Department of Ukrainian American Veterans, ships medical supplies and equipment donated from New Jersey and New York hospitals to medical schools and hospitals in the Ukraine. From 1993 to mid-1996, the program shipped 322 tons of supplies, valued at over $8 million, to Ukraine. So far, 36 shipments have been made; the 37th will soon depart for Kharkiv. Donated equipment, such as respirators, X-ray machines, dental chairs, and operating tables have been shipped through a State Department program that assists the NIS. UAV has also received computers and medical books from companies and medical and dental offices. These items are stored free of charge in the warehouses of Meest America, a company that ships goods to Ukraine, until they can be packed and transported. UAV contacts in Ukraine distribute the donated items; so far they have targeted hospitals that treat children victims of Chernobyl.
