GENERAL INFORMATION TO APPLICANTS OF THE IVAN S. LUBACHKO SCHOLARSHIP FOR BELARUSSIAN AMERICANS

The Ivan S. Lubachko Fund was formally established in 1983 with approximately $65,000. This is the amount which Ivan Lubachko, Professor of History at Murray State University, left after his death six years earlier to the Belarussian American Youth Organization (BAYO) for the primary purpose of providing student scholarships. Current trustees of the Fund were very active in the organization at the time of Lubachko's death. Raisa Stankievich was editor-in-chief of Belarussian Youth Magazine, George Azarko was associate editor of that magazine and National President of BAYO, and Vitaut Tumash was National Treasurer of BAYO.

Candidates for stipends or grants offered by the Fund must be of Belarussian descent and possess a rudimentary knowledge of Belarussian language, history, geography, and literature as well as provide evidence of academic achievement. (Trustees may waive the language requirement at their discretion.) Candidates must also demonstrate ethnic pride, a criteria to be evidenced by the following:

Stipends for undergraduate studies and grants for graduate-level dissertations are awarded to students whom the trustees feel will best serve the Belarussian community in the future. Candidates seeking stipends for undergraduate studies must demonstrate financial need. The trustees will not award grants or stipends to anyone who at any time was affiliated with the Communist Party or any other organization whose goals run counter the establishment of a free and independent Belarussian National Republic.

To apply for a grant or stipend or to receive more information, contact George Azarko, Raisa Stankievic, or Vitaut Tumash, Jr. at the address above.
