Corvallis established a relationship with Uzhgorod, Ukraine, in 1988. During the 1996–97 academic year, 12 high school students and three teachers traveled each way for extended stays in each city. There have also been two shipments (20- and 40-foot containers) of medical equipment and supplies from Corvallis to Uzhgorod; five delegates accompanied the shipments to oversee the distribution. The association received an award for Best Assistance Program at the Sister Cities International (SCI) convention in 1998. They have also received a USIA grant (through SCI) under the Municipal and Community Problem Solving Program. Corvallis will focus on the needs of children with physical disabilities in Uzhgorod. The association also intends to expand cultural contacts.
