Since its founding in 1964, the IESC has helped place volunteer business execu-tives in technical assistance projects in about 100 countries around the world. IESC maintains a database of thousands of retired executives who can be matched with requests for assistance from overseas client companies, governments and organizations. In the NIS, IESC Volunteer Execu-tives (VEs) are used in technical assistance projects, business planning workshops, industry restructuring projects, and public administration seminars. VEs develop and implement training programs with government officials, work with former defense industry enterprises making the transition to market economies, and assist companies to develop viable business plans to attract U.S. partners and/or sources of financing. Since the NIS program's inception in 1992, IESC has sent several hundred VEs to the NIS, providing volunteer service to more than 1,000 enterprises. The average length of stay for a technical assistance volunteer in the NIS is two months. IESC covers travel and living expenses as well as spouse accompani-ment for projects over 28 days. IESC has offices in various locations throughout the NIS.
