CCA is assisting Ukraine in a five-year project to develop a countrywide network of 100 "viable, soundly governed credit unions operating according to the principles of the World Council of Credit Unions." CCA is managing this project in collaboration with the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada.

The project is currently in its second phase, which involves creating 20 model credit unions in all regions of Ukraine. Twenty-four Ukrainian credit union leaders will experience two-month internships with Canadian credit unions, as well as training in Ukraine. The model credit unions will be responsible for the design and implementation of credit union promotion and training action plans, with technical and logistical support from the project. Small-business lending will also be encouraged through a credit union Enterprise Development Fund.

One Canadian professional is posted in Ukraine for the duration of the project. Long-term linkages and commercial possibilities between Ukrainian and Canadian credit union movements will be established through twinning arrangements with seven credit union.
