The International Society for Third-Sector Research was founded in 1992 as a permanent forum for researchers involved in the study of the Third Sector. ISTR is a scholarly organization established to advance knowledge about the Third Sector (philanthropy, civil society, and the nonprofit sector) internationally through the encouragement of objective, scientific research in all relevant disciplines.

ISTR's activities include bi-annual international conferences, publication of a quarterly newsletter "Inside ISTR" and an academic journal "Voluntas," organization of affinity groups and regional networks for researchers, and electronic mailing list for informal communication among members.
