Central Asia has been since ancient times a bridge between the East and the West. As a crossroads on the "Great Silk Road", even before the 4th century BC visit of Alexander the Great, it was a meeting and mixing place for cultures and peoples, religions and civilizations. The merchants and enterepreneurs of Central Asia waxed rich from serving the needs of the constant flow of traders. Now, after the breakup of the Soviet Union and the formation of five independent states in this geostrategic region, Central Asia is once again attracting the attention of people active in international relations, politics and business. The pages of "Central Asia" magazine are devoted to the achievements, resources and problems of these five countries and Afganistan - their political and economic development, their progress toward the creation of democratic societies and free market systems, and the possibilities of applying the experience of Western countries to their problems. The magazine will examine how the governments deal with internal problems, such as human rights and freedom of expression, and how they deal with neighboring countries, such as Russia, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan and China, and with other more distant but interested countries such as the United States and Japan."Central Asia" will pursue an independent social and political path. Founded by a group of polititical scientists, orientalists, journalists and human rights activists from Central Asian,it has been published in the Russian language in Sweden since 1995. The members of the Editorial Board are well-known intellectuals, scientists, writers and political figures from different countries of the world.
