During the past three decades non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have gained noticeably in importance in international development cooperation. Especially the 1990's have been favourable times to the registered associations as the donor agencies have increased funding allocations and developing country governments have provided more space for them. As a result, there has been a remarkable growth in the number of local NGOs in developing countries, and the overall activity has increased rapidly.

The book Learning NGOs and the Dynamics of Development Partnership analyses the work of NGOs from both conceptual and empirical view points. In the first part of the book some of the key concepts, such as civil society and voluntarism, are discussed and concerns about the development partnership are raised. Second part includes four case studies from Bangladesh - the country of some of the worlds largest and most famous NGOs. In the last part there are case studies of development NGOs from Finland, Ghana, Turkey, Peru and Nepal.

The contributors are a mix of social scientists and popular movement leaders from South-Asia, Europe, Africa and North-America. They are Mokbul Morshed Ahmed, Salahuddin Aminuzzaman, Nuriye Nilgun Aydogan, Afroz a Begum, Krishna B. Bhattachan, Farhad Hossain, Risto Isomki, I shtiaq Jamil, Stephanie McNulty, Paul Opoku-Mensah, Ware Newaz, Vijay Pratap, Marko Ulvila, Thomas Wallgren.
