East/West Education
East/West Education, a journal that is now nearly two decades old, was founded in 1977 by a group of international scholars led by Patrick L. Alston. The goal was to create a comparative and historical context for the study of Russian, Soviet and European education in the broadest sense, from upbringing and culture (vospitanie) to pedagogy and instructions (obrazovanie). From 1977 to 1985 the journal was titled Slavic and European Education Review (SEER) and, under the editorship of Cynthia Whittaker, it concerned itself with education in Russia, the Soviet Union, and Eastern and Western Europe. In 1985, the title was changed to allow comparisons with education in Asia, principally China and Japan, without changing the main focus. The recent monumental changes in central and eastern Europe that have dissolved the older order, emphasize the importance of studying the educational cultural life of that part of the world and placing it in a comparative historical context. To meet the need, East/West Education will publish articles, documents, essays and notes related to education and culture in Russia, other former Soviet states and eastern and central Europe. They welcome contributions from all disciplines and from scholars from all parts of the world. Their work is strengthened by cooperation with organizations such as the Institute for the Study of Russian Education at Indiana University and the Arbeitstelle fur vergleichende Bildungsforschung at Germany's Ruhr-Universitat.
