Public Education Center

PEC was established in 1995 to develop civic education programs and a curriculum on democracy for high schools in Uzbekistan. It grew out of a 1992 project of the International Republican Institute (U.S.) which sought to introduce leadership skills and democratic practices among Uzbek students. PEC plans to organize training workshops for teachers, psychologists and community activists which will focus on interethnic dialogue, non-violent conflict resolution, and group decision-making. It also hopes to conduct research and development of non-traditional teaching methods.
