EU was established at the end of 1987 as an environmental organization, and is affiliated with the Social-Ecological Union and the Law and Environment Eurasia Partnership, headquartered in Weston, MA. It was formed to work on protection of the Aral Sea and to address the loss of biodiversity in Central Asia.EU has organized several environ-mental camps for students and two environmental schools, in Tashkent and Chirchik. It has helped organize several regional and international environmental meetings. These include the 8th International Snow Leopard Symposium at Islamabad, Pakistan in November 1995 (together with International Snow Leopard Trust of Seattle) and a regional biodiversity conference, "Cheeta-95," in the same month in Dashkhowuz, Turkmenistan.
The group has no paid staff, a core group of 8-12 people who carry out most of its activities and about 50 other members. Most of its members are natural scientists. Mr. Tsaruk is especially well-informed about both domestic and foreign NGOs working on Central Asian problems.
