International Institute of Central Asia Biodiversity

The IICAB was established in 1995 at the regional biodiversity conference "Cheeta-95" by over 50 specialists on biodiversity protection from NGOs, state agencies, and academic institutions in Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the U.S., and Uzbekistan. The organization intends to focus it efforts in Central Asia and adjacent countries, but will work in any biodiversity protection activities throughout the NIS.

One of the primary goals of the institute is to provide a network of specialists with interests in the area. According to its founders, the problems of biodiversity conservation in the newly independent countries of Central Asia and adjacent countries are increasing while the region is losing specialists because of the economic and political situation. The institute hopes to lessen this problem through creation of this network of specialists.

Currently the institute is preparing an investment packet for the international donor community; establishing regional and international cooperation in studies and conservation of biodiversity in Central Asia; promoting information exchange; and preparing databases regarding different aspects of biodiver-sity protection.
