The center was established in 1992 as an independent branch of the International Center for Scientific Culture. The center focuses on environmental education, transboundary pollution prevention, developing an environmental resource center, and searching for alternative energy sources. In collaboration with the Environmental Research Institute of Connecticut, the center successfully completed development and publication of 15 university-level courses in environmental protection and pollution prevention. In May 1997, the center organized a workshop, sponsored by NATO, on the public health consequences of environmental pollution.
