Zeleny Svit was founded by a group of Kyiv writers and artists in December 1987 and established as a national organisation at its first Congress in October 1989. The organization has published the newspaper Zeleny Svit since 1990, and joined forces with Friends of the Earth International in 1991 as an associate member. The by-laws of ZS were registered with the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice in December 1992.The main principles of ZS are incorporated in its motto "Surviving, democracy, humanism". ZS is both an environmental and human rights advocacy organization. It focuses on the environment, but also monitors issues of democracy in Ukraine.
Zeleny Svit is a federation of over 100 local environmental groups with over 2,000 members across Ukraine. It is financed through dues, donations, and --more recently-- grants from environmental funds. Much of its work is performed on a volunteer basis.
Recent activities by the organization include:

- Environmental Accountancy. Monitors polluting enterprises and promotes public pressure on violators.
- Lobby Lawmakers. Promotes the development of environmental legislation and funding for alternative energy research and other environmentaly friendly road and construction projects.
