The League of Ukrainian Youth was founded at the end of 1990 by students and teachers who had taken part in protest demonstrations and a hunger strike in Kyiv earlier in the fall. It was organized for the "development of democracy and realization of human rights in Ukraine; to support Ukrainian education; and to draw youth into scientific [professional] work."

The league organizes conferences and summer camps on such topics as: history, politics, philosophy, folklore, etc. Recently it collected and donated books to a Ukrainian school in the Crimea (a predominantly Russian area) and invited the students to come to Kyiv for lectures on Ukrainian history and literature. The league has a "theater studio" and a "literary studio." and began publishing a newspaper in 1998.

Besides Kyiv, the League of Ukrainian Youth has offices in Chernigiv, Cherkassy, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Bila Cerkva, Kharkiv, Lviv, Stryy, Odessa, Sumy, Ternopil, Vinnytsia, Berdychiv, Zaporizhia and Zhytomyr. Its staff of 164 is mostly volunteer labor. Total annual expenditures are about US$2,500.
