Institute of Statehood and Democracy

ISD is a non-governmental, non-partisan, public policy research and educational institute, whose principal aims are to propagate the idea of Ukrainian statehood and assist in the dissemination of democratic values, the building of a rule-of-law society, and the development of an independent national policy. The institute was registered in June 1995 as a nonprofit civic organization. Its ten founders include five prominent politicians and five businessmen. Although the institute was created as an initiative by the Popular Movement of Ukraine "Rukh," Ukraine's "largest national-democratic political organization," it seeks to engage all national-democratic activists from Ukraine's eastern and southern regions.

The institute's principal task is to establish and run a program of study in politics and governance in Ukraine in order to promote the education and skills of Ukraine's political leaders. The institute regularly conducts seminars, conferences, and symposia and holds training courses for civic and political activists. Participants are chosen from all social strata, who have demonstrated a commitment to civic and political activism. The institute covers all expenses including travel and lodging.

ISD provides in-depth analysis of draft legislation and distributes analytical briefs to parliament members in order to encourage alternative legislation. In cooperation with the Conservative Party of Great Britain, the institute has conducted a number of seminars on organizing and managing publicity and election campaigns. Together with the Institute for Democracy in Europe, it organized a symposium on the rise of nationalism in the former Soviet Union.

The institute has published various books and brochures as well as an NGO Newsletter and an electronic bulletin, The Rukh Insider. The institute promotes the use of Ukrainian at its conferences and in its publications.
