The British Council, a registered British charity, is the United Kingdom's international network for education, culture and development services. The council was one of the first international agencies to establish itself in independent Ukraine in 1992. It now has an office, information center, and English Language Teaching resource center in Kyiv and centers in Lviv, Kharkiv, Odessa and Donetsk. These centers are "one-stop shops" for information from and about Britain. They also offer access to the Internet.The British Council is responding to the huge demand for English language learning in Ukraine by�among other things:
- Working in partnership with the Ministry of Education to develop and strengthen teacher training and the teaching of Business English
- Supporting teachers of English by providing access to English teaching resources and a range of professional development activities
- Teaching English to the Ukrainian armed forces, under a contract with the British Ministry of Defense and Foreign Office.
It plans to open an English Teaching Center in Kyiv, which will offer courses taught by professional and experienced native-speaker teachers of English.
The British Council also supports projects of the UK's Know How Fund in Ukraine such as:
- Joint Industrial and Commercial Attachment Programme, which provides Ukrainian managers with training placements in British companies
- Regional Academic Partnerships Scheme, which funds partnerships between Ukrainian and British institutions of higher education
- Supporting Non-Governmental Organisations, which provides practical support to Ukrainian NGOs and their partners
- Joining the Global Information Society, in which the British Council is working with Ukrainian libraries and other information providers to support the development of the information society infrastructure in Ukraine.
