The Donetsk Environmental Council was formed in 1989 in response to worsening environmental conditions in Donetsk and the lack of any similar organization in the city. The organization works mainly in the sphere of environmental education. From 1997 to 1998, the council worked on a joint Ukrainian-British program to create environmentally oriented school materials. Members of the group also participated in an international effort to draft the Youth Charter to Protect the Environment, the focus of a conference in Istanbul, Turkey, in November 1997.
