The American International Club of Donetsk was founded in August 1997 by Director Lilia Shumatskaya and U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Michelle Hanson. The goals of the club are to improve the members' spoken English, to give young people a safe and comfortable place to gather, to provide members an opportunity to learn about different countries and cultures, and to share Ukrainian culture with foreigners. AICD conducts conversational English-language and environmental education programs and workshops on business, leadership, and career developmentincluding resume-writing and interviewing techniques. It has recently started a training program for interpreters and a conversational English program with local schools for club members who plan to be English teachers.

An executive committee of elected members organizes the club's activities, with the guidance of the director and local Peace Corps volunteers. The club currently has 50 members and a monthly budget of US$300$400. AICD has developed good working relationships in Donetsk with the British Council, Counterpart Resource Center, Follow Me (a private English school), and the Donetsk Iron and Steel Works.
