ECOLOGIA is a U.S. based non-governmental organization which provides training, information and support to environmental NGOs in Central Europe, the Baltic States, and Eurasia. Its office in Tajikistan works primarily to administer hygiene and sanitation programs funded by UNICEF.Tajikistan's civil war has led to a lack of funds to maintain the water supply and distribution system. As a result many people, especially in rural areas, are forced to rely on open water sources, which in turn has led to an increasing incidence of diarrheal diseases. ECOLOGIA provides rural schools and health centers with access to clean water by providing hand pumps and teaching people to use sand filtration systems. It has also produced and distributed educational materials in preventative hygiene practices.
