Foundation to Support Civic Initiatives

The foundation was formed in 1995 as an umbrella organization to support the development of an NGO sector in Tajikistan. Its major programs include:

• The public information center Dastgirie serves the NGO community in Tajikistan. It has a library and database, offers fledgling groups informational and technical support, helps them find sources of financial assistance, and unites organizations with similar interests and goals for joint projects.
• The alternative energy group researches and publicizes renewable and environmentally clean energy sources. It manufactures solar kitchens and has helped establish a small hydroelectric power station in Shirkent National Park.
• The Agroaction Group works with farmers, offering training and information for ecologically sound methods of agricultural production.
• The foundation publishes a regular newsletter which reports on the activities of a wide range of Tajik NGOs.

Members of the group are active in environmental monitoring in Dushanbe. They have evaluated the quality of drinking water and conducted an assessment of food products from industrial areas.

The foundation has an office in Khujand to serve the needs of NGOs in the Leninabad region. It is a member of the Socio-Ecological Union, based in Moscow.
