Saint Petersburg Law School

The Saint Petersburg Law School (SPLS) was established in 1992 to promote two objectives, to encourage Russia’s transition to a democratic society and to creating active citizens. SPLS offers the following law programs taught by its 45 professors and leading practitioners. A 4-year Bachelor of Law degree; a 5-year program leading to the Degree of Lawyer; a 2.5 year program for students with a prior high school education in a field other than law; and a 4-year law program for pupils of the Legal Secondary Prep High School.

In its objective to encourage Russia’s transition to a democratic society, SPLS has undertaken a variety of projects. One of which is called the Living Law program, which is a clinic for law students who will gain experience in dealing with practical issues and the law and in relating this information to a live audience. The Living Law program also includes a curriculum for 8th and 9th grade students. The subjects taught by the high school teachers and by law students from SPLS include constitutional law, criminal and procedural law, family law, etc. Currently this project is in the pilot phase and the textbook is expected to be completed in the fall of 1999. Part of this program also includes dissemination to other regions in Russia and training of teachers to effectively apply the material in the classroom.

SPLS also welcomes inquires from the public, foundations and other NGOS about its programs and how they may collaborate together.

International Partners include: ABA, NED, OSI, and Street Law (USA).
