The society works to protect the rights of the imprisoned by monitoring conditions within Moscow oblast penitentiaries and seeking legal redress for rights violations. The organization, however, strives to cooperate with local government agencies whenever possible and work with—rather than against—the authorities. It also strives to educate prisoners and their families on the rights of the imprisoned. The group publishes a brochure entitled How the Convicted Can Protect Their Rights, which explains what constitutes a rights violation within the prison system. The brochure is distributed to both prisoners and their families and is also available on the group's Web site.
