ONA stands for "Obshchestvo Nezavisimykh Aktivistok", or "Society of Independent Women Activists". The word "ona" means "she" in Russian. The group was formed in late 1995, it has a feminist perspective, and a wide range of activities - ONA has lobbied for legislative change on pornography and family law; organized women's art exhibitions, poetry readings and medical/psychological lectures for women; published articles in local papers about women's history in the Tver Region. In early March each year they organize a week of women's cultural and educational events to celebrate Women's Day.
ONA has an office at the Tver Booklovers Society premises, and club meetings are held there each Tuesday night, in a friendly, non-hierarchical atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the group has no access to email or the wider Internet - but they welcome contact by phone or post with other women's groups.
ONA now has a site on the World Wide Web. At present, its web pages include an annual report of ONA activities for 1997, and a list of members. More materials will be added in the future. The information there is presented in Russian and English.
