The organization "Sokol," based in Nizhny Novgorod was formed in 1995 in the Moskovskii district of Nizhnii Novgorod -- a working class area of the city-- with a grant from the MIG plant located in the same district. Sokol sees its mission as providing an alternative to crime, alcoholism, and substance abuse among teenagers and young people. "Sokol" offers courses on personal security and a variety of sport and musical events. The Sokol organization consists of three parts:The first aspect to Sokol's work is a trained staff of security guards that work on both a paid and volunteer basis. These guards dress in uniform and patrol city streets or stand guard at schools and universities. These men speak to children on the dangers of alcohol and drugs. There is a strict code of conduct for the guards while on duty. These activities are fully supported by local police. The local police teach the guards basic laws and techniques for their patrols.
The second aspect of their work is providing activities for the youth of the city. Sokol stresses fitness and sports as a healthy focus for children. They arrange after-school activities such as basketball tournaments, fitness courses and structured games.

In cooperation with the Youth Anti-narcotic Federation of Russia, Sokol helps spread educational information on the dangers of drugs and alcohol, as well as on depression, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted disease to the older children.
Sokol's goal is to educate the youth of Nizhnii Novgorod on the dangers that can derail them from a long and healthy life, and to provide structured alternatives and living examples of people who live healthy productive lives.
In August 1997, the organization started publishing the "Sokol Information Bulletin" for teenagers and youth at risk. It includes announcements of special events, a schedule of the activities for the school year, and stories on recent activities of the organization.
