The Sympathy Center was originally established in 1992 to help victims of Soviet-era political repression. Today, its efforts are primarily focused on aiding children in war-torn areas of the Russian Federation. During the war in Chechnya, the center sent medical personnel to Chechen hospitals under the auspices of its Children of War in the 21st Century program. It continues to send psychiatric specialists to the area and currently operates a training program in which Chechen medical professionals receive special instruction in Moscow.
