MSHR seeks to improve the state of human rights and civil society in Russia through civic education. The school provides professional training courses for secondary school teachers and university professors to help them learn how to "teach democracy" and promote civic culture in the classroom. Since the school's creation in 1994, more than 7,000 teachers have attended these courses. Additionally, staff from MSHR consult with school administrators to devise curricula for civics courses and have published several textbooks and educational films on themes of human rights and government.The school's board of directors includes several prominent figures from the Soviet dissident movement, such as Larisa Bogoraz and Ludmila Alexeeva. In December 1997, it was a co-organizer (with UNESCO and the Federation Ministry of Education) of the Seventh Annual Conference on Human Rights Education, where participants discussed problems confronting education reform in Russia and strategies for continued teacher training.
PRINCIPLE
Moscow School of Human Rights:
- is a non-government organization
- is a non-commercial institution of additional education
- doesn't support any political parties, movements and campaigns
- recognizes ideological and world outlook diversity.
PURPOSES
- working out a strategy and programmes of education in the field of human rights, democracy, peace, civil rights, legal and political education
- creating educational and methodic-scientific literature, audio-visual and computer facilities for the purpose of education in the way of peace, teaching human rights and democracy
- training and retraining secondary and high school teachers, leaders of human rights movement, state employees
- improvement of legal and political culture of the students
- performing functions of an informational center of the problems of civic education, education in the sphere of child's rights, human rights, peace, democracy
- summing-up and distributing foreign and domestic experience in this sphere
CURRENT ACHIEVEMENTS
The staff are acknowledged specialists in the field of pedagogics, psychology, sociology, law, political science, social philosophy.
We can:
- give consultations, deliver lectures, provide with information on education in the sphere of human rights, peace, and democracy
- organize and give lectures, courses of advanced educational training and retraining
- organize and arrange International sessions and seminars with participation of foreign specialists in Moscow and different regions of Russia
ACTIVITY: SEMINARS, SESSIONS
In the course of the last few years our specialists took part in organizing and arranging of about 15 International seminars and sessions of training teachers to teach human rights, democracy. These seminars were organized with participation of the Council of Europe, UNESCO, Amnesty International, Canadian Fund of Human Rights and other organizations. More than 6,000 teachers have been trained at these seminars and sessions.

Experimental teaching aid. It highlights the aspect of Law in modern democratic society. The approach used in the teaching aid, differs from the one valid in the Soviet period. In most of high school institutions the subject was taught in accordance with the state regulations of Law. The goal of the teaching aid is to give the secondary school graduate students the basic information of the modern Law aspects. The book will be of interest of students and pupils.

The book acquaints pupils with the history of Human Rights Movement from its beginning to the end of 1995. The author wants her readers to understand the heroic efforts of the human rights pioneers and to understand and aid humans rights in present Russia.

The book offers basic information on criminal law and criminal process. It is presented in a lively way by including problems, questions, responses, and examples. It is meant for pupils of senior forms of secondary school.
