National Press Institute (NPI)
formerly known as the Russian American Press Information Center

NPI, formerly known as the Russian-American Press and Informational Center, was established in 1992 as a joint project of New York University's Center on War, Peace, and the News Media and the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute for the Study of Canada and the USA. In 1997, the organization changed its name and expanded its activities. Today, in addition to the main Moscow office, NPI has bureaus in St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, and Rostov-on-Don.

The institute's projects and programs include:

• Regular press conferences, briefings, discussions and debates held at NPI's Press Center in Moscow
• The Commission on Free Access to Information, which monitors legislation and government acts regarding journalists' access to information and publishes a bulletin, The Right to Know
• The Center for Cyberjournalism, an educational resource that introduces new media technology to Russian journalists by providing them with Internet access and computer courses. The center holds an annual conference for domestic and foreign journalists on new developments in media technology
• Special projects directed at increasing media awareness of topics such as election campaigns, ethnic conflict, and nuclear proliferation.
