NPI, formerly known as the Russian-American Press and Informational Center, was established in 1992 as a joint project of New York University's Center on War, Peace, and the News Media and the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute for the Study of Canada and the USA. In 1997, the organization changed its name and expanded its activities. Today, in addition to the main Moscow office, NPI has bureaus in St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, and Rostov-on-Don.
