Pericles ANO

Pericles ANO (autonomous non-commercial organization) is a Russian registered group which conducts educational projects and training in the fields of economics and law. Its parent organization, Pericles International, was founded in France. Since 1992, Pericles International and Pericles ANO have worked together on various projects in Russia, including:

• Translating into Russian and publishing books on economics and banking law
• Assisting the Ministries of Justice of Russia and France with training projects for Russian judges
• Arranging for Russian law students to study international law topics in Europe
• Assisting the Moscow Mayor's office with conferences on safety in major cities
• Helping to establish Moscow as the 1998 host for the UN Sustainable Cities Program.

Pericles' first permanent project, the American Business & Legal Education Project (ABLE), is an intermediate- term training program founded by several American professors teaching in Moscow. The professors recognized the dire need for young professionals to get professional training quickly. Marion Dent, Dean of ABLE, notes that "there is nothing available in Moscow between expensive, one or two-day business seminars and full bachelors or MBA programs. Young professionals don't have the financial luxury of spending a year or two in school, and they can't afford and don't learn enough in short commercial seminars."

ABLE provides affordable six week seminars in business, legal and English language topics. Most courses are offered in a series of three so that students can study up to 18 weeks on one topic. For example, ABLE's Marketing series includes courses on Marketing Principles, Advertising and International Marketing, and Public Relations. Other course series are offered in Business English and Law. ABLE also runs a program to help students get into American Universities and Law or Business Schools.

Typically, seminars meet 6 hours per week, and are limited in size to 14 people (averaging 8-10). Classes are practically oriented and most are taught in English. Tuition per course typically ranges from $400-$500. This fee included books, computer time, software, and other teaching materials. Pericles also offers scholarships, financial aid, and work study positions to students based on both merit and need. Dent estimates that about half the students in the ABLE program receive financial aid, with one or two studying on full scholarships.
