Nonviolence International -
Newly Independent States

Created in 1992, Nonviolence International - Newly Independent States, promotes nonviolence in the NIS by doing public education about armed conflicts, assisting victims of such conflicts and minimizing stet consequences on the territories of the NIS.

Nonviolence International - Newly Independent States is currently working on a "Peace-Info" project, which is aimed at strengthening and uniting the role of individual activists, public organizations, and nongovernmental structures through education, communication and information on each others aims and achievements in order to prevent violence, and achieve and maintain peace in areas of conflict or tension. By networking peace groups, NGO's and individual peace activists and by keeping them mutually well-informed by distributing information on peacemaking, nonviolence, human rights protection and available resource centers, it creates a faster, stronger and more effective way in meeting their "Nonviolence" targets.

In particular, NI - NIS has worked in conflict areas of the Transcaucasus and North Caucasus. In Dagestan and Chechnya, NI-NIS members helped local activists and NGOs to develop their proposals and contact funding agencies. It has created e-mail addresses for peace activists in Makhachkala and the Medik Charitable Foundation from the town of Kizlyar, Dagestan. NI-NIS also works to link up the local peace activists and NGOs in Chechnya and Ingushetia to the system of computerized electronic communication.

Nonviolence International - NIS also assists in publishing a bulletin "Joint Nonviolent Action" on human rights issues, armed conflicts and nonviolence around the world. NI-NIS members are preparing and developing information to be included in a book on the problem of refugees and ethnic tension in the eastern part of the North Caucasus (Ingushetia, Chechnya, Dagestan).

The NI - NIS web site includes an excellent on-line database (in Russian) on organizations throughout the NIS which work on issues of peace, human rights and conflict resolution.
