The association was formed in 1991 by a group of distinguished Russian scholars. Its activities include research and analysis of current problems in political and social affairs; sponsorship of lectures and seminars on Russian political history; special investigation in Russian archives; distribution of books and journals through its affiliated publishing house, Rosspen; and assistance to foreign scholars needing contacts, reasonable hotel accomodations, etc.
