Citizens Democracy Corps–Moscow

The Moscow office of CDC was formed in 1998 as a sister organization of CDC, Inc., based in Washington, D.C. As a Russian entity, it is expected to seek funding from domestic Russian sources and provide Russian staff with the opportunity to work independently.

The main mission of CDC is to provide training, consulting, and information services in support of the development of business and non-governmental organizations in Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus region, and Central and Eastern Europe. Since 1992, CDC has facilitated the travel and work of more than 500 volunteer consultants on more than 600 projects in companies and organizations throughout Russia. Over 60 percent of CDC's volunteers are entrepreneurs dedicated to assisting small and medium-sized enterprises to start, grow, and sustain themselves in Russia. CDC has a total staff of 55 and expenditures of approximately $6 million per year.

CDC's volunteer consulting and technical assistance program, begun in 1992, is administered through its seven regional field offices located in St. Petersburg, Novgorod, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Magadan, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Examples of this program's success are its recent consulting projects for the city of St. Petersburg, which included project development for rebuilding of the Leningrad Zoopark, a feasibility study for a large amusement park, and a development plan for the Peterhof National Historical Site.

CDC's Business Collaboration Center, opened in 1995, maintains an informational Web site for USAID. The center has offices in Khabarovsk, Ekaterinburg, Moscow and St. Petersburg and roving reporters in Vladivostok, Rostov, and Stavropol.

Recent projects to extend Internet access and business consulting to local businesses have been implemented in collaboration with the Congress of Business in Stavropol; the International Investment Center in Yaroslavl, Kostroma, and Ivanovo; and the International Business Center in Ekaterinburg.
