Foreign and Russian scholars at the center collaborate with staff of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., but carry on independent research on topics of political, economic and military affairs. Current research emphases are:

- Ethnicity and nation-building
- Migration and refugees
- Foreign and security policy
- CIS integration
- Rethinking U.S.-Russia relations
The Moscow Center publishes a quarterly journal in Russian, Pro et Contra.
